Meaning of Education Essay

â€Å"Yep, that’s the last of it† my dad yelled as he slammed the trunk shut. Totes were piled up high and filled with clothes, shoes, and lots of old memories. After getting all settled in my new apartment my family and I said our goodbyes. This next chapter in my life was finally here. I was now a college student entering the real world. We all have our purposes for taking the next step in life and going to college. My purpose for attending college is to take a leap towards creating success and meaning in my life. My family has been a giant influence on attending college. The day my older brother went off to college it was no surprise. It seems that moving on to college was the natural thing to do. For instance, graduating kindergarten and moving to the 1st grade is similar to graduating from high school and moving on to college. It’s just a chapter in life that our parents brought us up expecting to reach and we’ve been taught that it would be the right choice since elementary school. It’s what we grew up knowing we were supposed to do when we got to that point in life. Ultimately, we were taught that this step would lead us to the success to building a more meaningful life. All in all, education is the key to success. Having an education opens many doors to amazing opportunities. Why waste time stuck in a slump when one can go out into the world and be someone, make a difference in this world, and have the pride to say that â€Å"I am successful†. With a college education, the amount of freedom is endless. There are many more careers to choose from and the ability to stand out from others increases your career success. An education helps one develop a more meaningful life, that’s what I want to achieve. I want to make a difference in this world by not only my art but my everyday life. My goals are to one day be very well off financially, enabling me to support my future family and enjoy all the accomplishments and great opportunities life has to offer. Just on a walk to school, I get a glance of the harsh reality by seeing all the unfortunate civilians struggling to survive each day. For instance, an old man and his dog, hungry as can be, asking for money on the corner of the street. This makes me realize that I am very grateful for what I have and that an education is what I must pursue to accomplish my goals and dreams. With all the love and support of my family and friends I have a great positive outlook on a college education. Having moved on to this next step in my life, I already feel as if I’m that much closer to reaching my goals. I can see how proud my family is as they watch me better my life and future. With all my past experiences, I now have a strong mentality to finish with pride and follow all my dreams. Overall, an education is the way to success and the key to many great opportunities.

Bailout tarp in the united states

As the headlines in today’s newspapers all around the world show, there is a global economic slowdown. Economies all over the world are being plunged into what is tentatively being called â€Å"Recession. † While there are those who believe that this is simply an expected trend given the rapid growth of the global economy, it still does not detract from the fact that it is an urgent and pressing problem. In order to address this problem, several governments have issued massive bail-outs and laws designed to manage the system. In line with the principles of Keynesian Economics, it seems that the government is the only player capable of solving this problem. It is this government intervention through the Federal Reserve, led by Ben Bernanke, that is touted as the solution to the country’s, if not the world’s, economic problems. According to most economists, the current bailout scenarios that have been presented are nothing more than prime examples of throwing good money after bad.Instead of tackling the problem head on by implementing sound fiscal and monetary policies, the United States government is bent on revitalizing the economy by allowing massive losers such as the AIG group to continue accumulating losses and patronizing its already proven bad habits. The main strategy here, as employed by Chairman Bernanke, is to pump prime the economy through a mixed strategy of monetary and fiscal policies. It is posited that increasing funding to these â€Å"black hole institutions† will be the key to ending this financial crisis. One of these policies is the voluntary capital purchase program. It is aimed at selling preferred shares of stock to the United States Government on favorable terms that afford the maximum amount of protection to the taxpayer. Another policy that has been implemented is the systematic risk exception under the FDIC Act which grants the FDIC the power to guarantee, on a temporary basis, the senior debt of all F DIC insured institutions. The third policy that has been announced is the increased access to funding for all of the businesses in various sectors of the American economy. The goal of this is to stimulate economic growth on a micro level in order to develop solid economic fundamentals that can help resuscitate the economy. Other steps that the Federal Reserve has taken include the strengthening of capital position and funding ability of American Financial Institutions. These are to be achieved through multilateral agreements such as the reciprocal currency arrangement (Swap Lines) with International Central Banks. Finally, the heralded US $700 billion bailout plan that was recently enacted into law has also been designed to infuse much needed capital into the market and to protect the exposure of several multinational and local financial institutions. While there are indeed real benefits for pump-priming the economy, the more pragmatic approach is to control spending. One of the optio ns available to control this problem is to adjust interest rates in order to prevent capital flight and also encourage more investors to bring in foreign currency. By increasing interest rates the demand for local currency is increased. The reason for this is that only the local currency can be used in transacting business in the country. This means that investors have to convert their foreign currencies into local currency in order to be able to do business transaction in the market. If foreign investors come into the country then there will now be a marked increase in the demand for the local currency thus stabilizing the exchange rate once more. While there is certain economic and political sense in the policies of Bernanke, the herculean task of rehabilitating one of the world’s largest economies cannot be done through the efforts of the Federal Reserve alone.Even employing one or a mix of the strategies would only be preliminary to finding the real solution to the problem . So while current theories show that monetary and fiscal policies may indeed impact inflation and unemployment thus alleviating the economic situation, such is not always the case in certain situations as shown in the example provided. The basics such as solid economic fundamentals must always be considered when looking at the impact of such changes to see if they can really attain the desired effect.

Solid Waste Generation

Solid waste generation is an inevitable consequence of production and consumption activities in any economy (Bennagen, M. E., 2002). Dumping of solid wastes in unauthorized places such as roadside, drains, and undeveloped piece of land leads to accumulation of solid wastes in the environment. Agricultural wastes are solid wastes that contribute to the amount of accumulated solid wastes in many parts of the world. The Philippines, which is considered as an agricultural country, contributes a large percentage of agricultural wastes in the world. The country contributes more than 10,000 tons of solid wastes per day (Bennagen, M. E., 2002).  This large amount of accumulated solid wastes contributes to problems such as flooding in urban areas, uncollected garbage, and inadequate disposal sites. The effects of accumulated solid wastes in the environment are becoming one of the major concerns of the country and worldwide. In the field of civil engineering, the effects of solid wastes on the hydration process of concrete have been investigated and the studies provided promising results (Okonkwo, 2012). Attempts have been made by various researchers to convert solid wastes to beneficial applications with high level of success in helping to reduce solid waste. Therefore, identifying analogous material from the waste products and using for beneficial application is an idea worth embracing.Eggshell is an agricultural waste that litters the environment. It is a common waste product in fast food, restaurants, and other food-related business establishments. This waste material was found out to be mainly composed of compounds of calcium. Eggshells are composed of 93.70% calcium carbonate, 4.20% organic matter, 1.30% magnesium carbonate, and 0.80% calcium phosphate (Rabiu A. and Mtallib M., 2009). Eggshell is primarily composed of calcium carbonate, which is the primary raw material in producing cement. This compound, which is naturally occurring and abundantly found in the Earth's crust, can also be found in bones, marbles, stalactites, and stalagmites. On the basis of the common compositional characteristics of cement and eggshells, heating or incineration of eggshells to produce eggshell ash and adding controlled amounts would significantly affect the properties of cement in its application to concrete.

RED BULL Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

RED BULL - Assignment Example Red Bull is the first of its kind in the global market, and carved out for itself a new category that did not exist before. This distinction and the elements that built it are the sources of brand equity. Brand equity is defined as the added value that is endowed on economic goods as a result of branding (Bick, 2009; Farhana, 2012; M’zungu, et al., 2010; Znaidi & Fidha, 2012). it is – â€Å"[The] differentiation effect of brand knowledge on customer response leading to long-term outlook, customer knowledge, brand name, brand power, product innovation, brand quality, brand extensions, brand credentials, brand advertising, brand publicity and above all, effective brand management.† (Arora, et al., 2009, p. 75) 2. Case issues 2.1. Identification of Red Bull’s sources of brand equity The most important issue is the identification of Red Bull’s sources of brand equity, because they drive the product’s value creation. If the firm is to move product ion forward into the next higher level and avoid obsolescence, it must innovate along the line of its brand equity to ensure that what has been achieved has not been diminished. 2.2. Determination of new products under the Red Bull brand The innovation necessary to preserve brand equity and create value must emanate from the source of brand equity; having identified this in the first issue, the secondary issue is to put this knowledge into practice by choosing among alternative products that add further value. 3. Analysis of the Case The case treats on the entry of the Red Bull brand into new product categories, and the impact of this move on brand equity. These aspects are the gist of the three questions the answers to which follow: 3.1 Description of Red Bull’s sources of brand equity – Aaker’s sources of brand equity consist of 10 items spread over five dimensions, namely brand loyalty, perceived quality/leadership, associations/differentiations, awareness, a nd market behaviour (Gill & Dawra, 2010). These are all present in Red Bull. One element of brand loyalty is premium pricing; Red Bull is well received because its high price was seen to be justified by its added benefits above other drinks. Perceived quality and leadership are partnered with differentiation; Red Bull was marketed as the first energy drink, and thereafter leader of its class. The fourth dimension, brand awareness, was evident in German and Hungarian markets where, solely through word of mouth, mystique about the brand spread (including reference to â€Å"bulls’ testicles† as ingredient) such that the product was well anticipated and demand created long before its introduction. The fifth dimension, market behaviour, was positive in countries such as Austria where the product was first introduced, and the positive response worked to create brand equity in new markets Red Bull subsequently entered. 3.2 How Red Bull’s marketing program contributes t o brand equity The elements of the marketing mix employed by Red Bull all contributed to a different experience in the mind of the consumer, which was important in creating product recall and influencing future choice (Korkofingas & Ang, 2011). The marketing mix includes the 4 P’s, namely product, pricing, placement, and positioning. 3.2.1 Product – The first of a new class of beverage, the energy drink, which competitors first dismissed as a fad and then later on imitated. In Austria, the company needed to lobby for the creation of a new category, â€Å"functional food,† because the product did not fit into any of the established categories. The taste, which was adjusted to approximate the traditional cola, nevertheless retained a hint of â€Å"medicinal† flavour that still distinguished it as a functional beverage. 3.2.2 Packaging –

Chemical Engineering Dissertaion. Designing a venturi scrubber Essay

Chemical Engineering Dissertaion. Designing a venturi scrubber - Essay Example This happens in the bottleneck of the venturi. Behind this bottleneck, the pressure drops, reducing flow velocity back to normal. At this point, contaminant particles are collected and removed. A venture scrubber is the simplest but most compact but efficient wet dust collector. It collection efficiency is rated from 0.2 Â µ particles when high linear gas velocities ranging 50 to 150m/s reach the throat as the gas is contacted with water. Therefore, collection efficiency of a venture scrubber depends on the pressure drop experienced during the operation. The scrubber is made of a long tube with consecutive converging and diverging sections with steep rising velocity in the convergent section. This enables the scrubbing liquor to get in contact with the throat and convert the kinetic energy into pressure in the downstream divergent diffuser. When gas flow is a variable, it is necessary to adapt the cross-section of the throat to maintain constant velocity as well as collection efficiency. In a simple tubular design, the throat is made of rubber and pinched pneumatically. Other types consider mechanical control to adapt the cross-sectional area. Amount of water injected is also varied. As water moves in the closed circuit, a settling basin is incorporated that separates the collected dust as slurry. The high velocity of the gas makes it important to consider erosion and abrasion factors as well as corrosion due to the absorption of acid gas compounds. Water treatment of the collected water pose considerable costs to venture dust collectors. The water droplets coalesce to a size of 0.1mm and are separated by centrifugal forces (conventional cyclones), lamellae separator, sick-sack flow, inertial forces and wetted collecting surfaces, or wire or fibre gauge packages. The droplets from venturi scrubbers require entrainment. Therefore droplet separators are required. A two step arrangement is preferred with a first contact using recycled water while the

Project Management - Essay Example In order to ensure the success of the Scantel project, Brian Callister who is an engineer and the acting manager of CSU together with an engineer and a technician was given three months deadline to report to VIL board regarding the following: (1) expected outcome of possible technical problems; (2) assess the feasibility of developing the concept into a working prototype; and (3) plan the development tasks which would lead to the prototype stage. Based on Callister’s suggested Scantel network diagram, the researcher will analyze and identify the key factors that may contribute to the delay of project completion. In line with this matter, the researcher will provide reasons that could promote the projects’ potential risks of delays. Eventually, the researcher will provide some strategies that could keep the project done within the preferred schedule. To be able to analyze the possible cause of bottleneck in each stages of the network diagram that was proposed by Callister and eventually develop an effective strategy that could prevent the delay upon completing the Scantel project within the desired schedule. Based on the simplified network diagram proposed by Callister, the major bottleneck with regards to the Scantel project occurs more on: (1) display system; (2) the chassis & body; and (3) the lens and housing. (See Figure I – Simplified Network Diagram on page 16) The display system is referring to the simplified sub-system of the whole plan. It shows the major events that will be needed in order to manufacture, test and calibrate the end product within a specific period of time. The problem with the display system is with regards to its accuracy. Considering the fact that the time allocation for producing the lens and housing is unknown, the whole schedule based on the plan is making the display system less accurate. For instance, the time allocation for producing the lens and housing will take longer time to produce than

1980 MGM Fire and Fire Codes Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

1980 MGM Fire and Fire Codes - Case Study Example Fig.1 shows the site plan of the hotel. It had 26 floors designed luxuriously. Ground floor had the Casino, restaurants, showrooms and a convention center and upper level of the jai alai fronton. The below grade level had the lower level of the jai alai fronton, a movie theatre, several shops and boutiques, service areas, and underground parking. There were 2076 guest rooms and another 780 guest rooms under construction on the west side of the building. Hotel structure had fire-resistive, protected non-combustible and unprotected non-combustible segments. Both combustible and non-combustible materials were used for interior finish. Fire sprinklers were installed only in some major portions and every area was not protected for fire. Part of the 26th floor, the arcade level, convention areas, showrooms and some restaurants on the casino level were protected while the casino and tower were not protected with fire sprinklers. A manual fire alarm system was present in the hotel. The guest room floors had manual pull stations. The alarm system had bells and public address capability. There was no automatic detection system installed in the building (National Fire Protection Association, 1980).... Security tried to put off the fire but it was so huge that the Clark County fire department had to be contacted at around 7.15 a.m. (National Fire Protection Association, 1980). Fig.2 and Fig. 3 shows the fire magnitude at MGM Grand. Fig. 2 ("MGM", 2008) The MGM Grand - view from the corner of Las Vegas Blvd and Flamingo Rd Fig 3 ("MGM", 2008) The MGM Grand Fire - looking toward North-East from I-15 According to the fire department fire broke out due to an electrical problem in a combustible covered space next to a pie case in the restaurant. Presence of combustible interior finish and other material like plywood, plastic, paper, wooden decorative members and foam plastic padding of chairs and booths in the Deli helped fire spread very quickly and reach an uncontrollable magnitude. There was no protection in the path for the fire to spread to the Casino. Combustible interior finish, furnishings, other wooden and plastic materials like foam padding and moldings present in the Casino put in more fuel in the fire. Flow of air was also enough for the fire to inflate (National Fire Protection Association, 1980). Within 15 minutes of its detection fire had swallowed up a huge area including the Deli, the Casino and porte cocher on the west end of the building. Heat and smoke rising to the upper floors notified guests of the problem on the ground floors. Helicopters, fire fighters, construction workers and passersby were able to save many people. People who tried their way out through roofs and other exits were rescued while others waited in their rooms for help. Hotel was evacuated completely in 4 hours. 84 people died in the tragic incident. 14 people died on the Casino level, 29 in rooms, 21 in

Differences between the US and German Corporate Governance Systems Essay - 22

Differences between the US and German Corporate Governance Systems - Essay Example In contrast, German corporate governance code is the medium that determines the corporate issues in Germany. Â  Unlike US law the German corporate system emphasis on protecting the creditors, and gives freedom for accumulating indirect reserves. Another notable feature is that in the German system, accounts are calculated in monetary terms instead of book values. On the contrary, US government permits organizations to create shareholders and to exert their own management control. Moreover, in the US, Sarbanes Oxley Act emphasize on individual responsibilities of CEOs and CFOs; whereas, German corporate governance gives importance to collective responsibility. Â  Regardless of the dissimilar business environment, Law Daimler and Chrysler have rather collectively dealt with the common issues by designing policies to operate their business efficiently. They strategically evaluate the business concerns and formulate further plans to meet challenges that are associated with the variance in business cultures. Their formula emphasizes on the submission of DC balance sheet that the whole company has to be committed to. Individuals like the CEO, CFO, and Chairman also come under the ambit of certain obligations. Also, the company has applied cascade signing system in its business operations. Daimler and Chrysler have given more weight to collective and individual responsibility in management concerns. Â  Law Daimler and Chrysler could have initiated some researchers on the major corporate issues to identify the essential areas of strategic change. It should focus on other competitors for learning how they handle the issues related to organizational convergence. In addition, the company might have explored new potential regions for business expansion to overcome the legal barriers in their domestic market.

The five functions of management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

The five functions of management - Essay Example The five functions of management This function enables the managers to distribute authority to individual job holders or other employees (Martin and Fellenz 1-75). Controlling can be seen as a four step process of establishing performance standards based on the company’s mission and objectives, measuring and reporting of actual performance, comparing the two and taking of other corrective or preventive actions that may be deemed necessary to solve a particular problem. The main purpose of controlling is to identify deviations from the objectives and taking corrective action (French, Rayner and Rees 12-25). Directing refers to the ability to influence people’s behavior through the motivation, communication, group dynamics, leadership and discipline. The aim of directing is to channel the behavior of all the personnel to accomplish the organization’s mission and objectives while at the same time helping them accomplish their own career objectives (French, Rayner and Rees 12-25). Staffing is fillin g and keeping filled with qualified people all the positions in the business. Some of the specific activities included in this function include recruiting, hiring, training, evaluating and compensating employees. In order to carry out this function properly a manger will liaise with the human resource department. The use of incentives has been seen as advantageous because they encourage and promote appropriate safe behavior among employees at the work place. It is a way that companies are able to demonstrate that they care for their employees and recognizes those who work safely. Secondly long term behavior can be changed through awareness and the provision of financial rewards for proper behavior and this will result in improved morale and reduced worker compensation costs. Third safety incentive programs reduce accidents at the work place as they encourage employees to work in safe conditions (Princhard). The disadvantages of safety incentive programs are that, first they do not o bligate any changes in the existing processes or procedures. Accidents are generally as a combination of some unsafe conditions and therefore by giving employees rewards they try to minimize accidents but the sane processes are still in existence. Incentives also ignore reasons such that they deflect attention from real issues and can disguise genuine deficiencies, flaws or safety management process within the organization. Third incentives are based on a wrong assumption that is unsafe acts. They assume that accidents are intentional acts and that these incentives will cause employees to stop behaving improperly which is wrong (Princhard). Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory is a theory of motivation that is used to explain the spectrum of human behavior. He proposed that motivation is a function of five basic needs – physiological, safety, love, esteem and self-actualization. He said that these categories are arranged in a hierarchy- that human needs emerge in a predictable stair-step fashion. When one need is satisfied another need up in the ladder emerges or is activated. The process continues until the need for self-actualization is activated (Harold Koontz 290-98). Physiological needs include the following: food, water, warmth, rest and shelter. Safety needs include the

Personal Finance Concepts Investing Essay Example for Free

Personal Finance Concepts Investing Essay According to the finance researchers a portfolio refers to an appropriate collection of investments for an institution or a single individual. An investment portfolio is constructed by financial advisors or a retainer their main task involves investment analysis that are useful; during purchasing of stocks and bonds, and other business assets. . Cliff uses his present finances to determine his future holding and finance position. Cliff financial statement seems to spread in many fields, he invests in fixed assets and even before he could fully exploit his new investment strategy he is already investing in shares and bonds. Basically this is diversification and investing assets such as bonds and shares in such a scenario is exposing a high percentage of ones investment at risk (Grant 2005). Cliff is a risk taker hence he is more likely to invest in income securities and unwarranted investment such as the equities. Hence Cliff will tend to have very low cash holding and shares, in addition he is not expected to hold high levels of securities as savings since his age is allows him to have a long time to invest in most cases age is a great determinate in an individuals saving amount and investment, though Cliff will tend to save for his future plans such as his wedding plans, his marginal propensity to save will still be quite low. Since Cliff is earning an approximate of $340000 he I expected to distribute his earning to his present and future expenses, A great source of cliff’s finances is in terms of bonds and shares which are a good way to invest but the shortcoming with Cliff’s investment is the fact that he did not take a good research before imposing a big sum of his money into the investment, the investment in bonds and shares involve a high percentage of risk and for that reason if they are not carefully researched on they bring high degrees of losses or very little profits. In that light they are not included in the construction of a portfolio, instead the items that can be included in the construction of a portfolio are savings, cash at hand and revenue that is already attained or the degree of risk is not too high. Using Cliff’s example he can spread his earning such 30% of his total earnings is equities, 40% income securities, 20% sundry expenses and 10 % as savings. The assumption is that cliff is a young risk taker hence his securities will tend to be and also his savings and cash. Â  Below is an example of Cliff’s portfolio: References Frasca , R, (2006) – Personal Finances: An Integrated Planning Approach, 7th Ed – Pearson Prentiss Hall Grant, R (2005) Contemporary Strategy Analysis Blackwell Publishing Karnani, A (1981) – Business Portfolio: an analytical Approach – Harvard Publishing .

There is no need to stand in a long line on a weekend morning to handle your transactions.   Transfer funds: With online banking, you can make money transfer between your own accounts, or send money to a third party account. All you need is recipient/payee information and enough funds in your account. Quite often, the operations are performed in real time   View automatically updated spending report: All your purchases are sorted into familiar categories automatically to save, no expenses to enter. It is easy to see where your money goes. Track your payment history: Online banking gives you an opportunity to search your payments by transaction type, date, description or amount. When did you last pay Company X? When did you buy your computer? To whom did you make your most recent payment? Your bank knows the answers.   Schedule payments in advance: Most banks offer customers the ability to schedule a payment on a specified date. Once the amount is entered and the payee is checked off, the funds are automatically deducted from your online bank account.   Take advantage of online brokerage: Internet banking lets you invest online. You can place and confirm trades 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Most banks provide a wide range of money market instruments from various issuers. Change contact details:   You can log in to your online account and change contact information (e-mail address, telephone number, password, etc.). It is more secure than to send this information by e-mail. Get alerts: This service allows you to receive timely e-mail messages from your bank about any critical changes related to your Internet accounts. For example, you can get alerts when you make a withdrawal or change your contact information. Disadvantages of MayBank Online Banking Security: Yes, online banking is generally secure, but it certainly isnt always secure. Identity theft is running rampant, and banks are by no means immune. And once your information is compromised, it can take months or even years to correct the damage, not to mention possibly costing you thousands of dollars, as well. Some online banks are more stable than others. Not all online setups are an extension of a brick-and-mortar bank. Some operate completely in cyberspace, without the benefit of an branch that you can actually visit if need be. With no way to physically check out the operation, you must be sure to thoroughly do your homework about the banks background before giving them any of your money Learning curve: Customer service can be below the quality that youre used to. Some people simply take comfort in being able to talk to another human being face-to-face if they experience a problem. Although most major banks employ a dedicated customer service department specifically for online users, going through the dreaded telephone menu can still be quite irritating to many. Again, some are considerably better (or worse) than others. Slow processing: From the moment you entered a financial transaction with your bank via the computer.   Usually the bank will require you to submit certain documents like an identification card, signature and the like.   Not only will the bank online require you to submit documents but also to provide special power of attorney in cases where you want to do transactions together with your spouse.   A concrete example is when you want to manage all your wealth and resources together as a couple and you wish to view it online.   Certain technical procedures regarding online banking may be taxing too and complicated. As a result, not all online transactions are immediate. Online banking is subject to the same business-day parameters as traditional banking. Therefore, printing out and keeping receipts is still very important, even when banking online. The Impact of MayBank Online Banking: The Online Banking services in Maybank have profound changes during the last decade. The most obvious change has been the large number of bank mergers, which have increased both the average size of banks and the area over which they operate. Other changes may also prove dramatic but are at this point just getting under way the growth of Internet banking and the combination of banking with other financial services, such as insurance and securities underwriting. The implications of these changes for the profitability and safety of banks have been widely discussed, but what do they mean for local economies? Some analysts argue that the changes will benefit most communities by increasing the publics access to financial services and making it easier for banks to continue lending during regional economic downturns. Others argue that the changes will end up hurting many communities, especially smaller ones, because the large organizations created by mergers will be uninterested in serving small customers and will siphon off funds from smaller markets to lend in big cities. To shed light on the debate, this article focuses on the two groups that are most likely to be affected by the transformation of banking. Consumers and small businesses. Before the recent changes, surveys consistently found that these two groups relied heavily on local banks for their credit and payments needs. It stands to reason, therefore, that they would also be the groups most affected by any changes in local banking practices resulting from consolidation, Internet banking, or financial integration. A further reason for focusing on small businesses is that these enterprises play an especially important role in the economic performance of smaller communities the communities where there has been the greatest concern about the possible adverse effects of the transformation in banking. The article concludes that the recent changes in banking are likely to benefit consumers and small businesses in most communities, as long as they remain free to choose between small and large banks for their banking services. The first section of the article reviews the three major Changes in the banking system consolidation, Internet banking, and financial integration. The next two sections argue that these changes are likely to benefit both consumers and small businesses, provided small banks are available to fill any gaps in service or credit to smaller customers. The last section concludes that small banks face a major but not insurmountable obstacle in continuing to fill this role-the increased difficulty of obtaining funds. THE IMPACT OF THE ONLINE BANKING ON CONSUMERS: Consumers have traditionally relied on nearby banks and branches for many of their banking services. The transformation of online banking in Maybank now under way will hurt consumers by raising the price or reducing the quality of these services. Or the changes benefit consumers by expanding the array of services will offered by banks and allowing consumers to go outside the local market for banking services. It was once thought that the main benefit to consumers of online banking would be lower fees for banking services or higher rates on deposits. According to this view, the cost to banks of online transactions would be much lower than the cost of traditional transactions through a normal branch. As a result, consumers would be charged lower fees or Paid higher deposit rates if they banked online instead of going to a branch office. Proponents of this view pointed to the example of online brokers, who charge investors much less for trading stocks than either discount brokers or traditional full-commission brokers (Marks). THE IMPACT OF ONLINE BANKING ON SMALL BUSSINESS: Like consumers, small businesses have traditionally obtained most of their banking services from nearby banks and branches. Will the transformation of banking hurt small businesses by shifting ownership of these banking offices to large, distant organizations uninterested in dealing with small customers? Or will it help small businesses by making banking and other financial services cheaper and more convenient. As noted earlier, mergers have significantly increased the share of banking resources controlled by large, widely dispersed organizations. Some observers worry that this change in the banking system will end up reducing the total supply of credit to small businesses. These observers acknowledge that some of the businesses that are denied credit as a result of bank mergers may be bad risks that should not have received loans in the first place. They argue, however, that mergers will also reduce the supply of credit to many good risks, hurting the local economy. As in the case of consumers, the main benefit of online banking in Maybank to small businesses is likely to be greater convenience. For several years, large businesses have enjoyed electronic access to their banks through private computer networks. Internet banking in Maybank is now extending that access to smaller businesses. Some bank web sites allow small business customers to view their balances in real time, transfer money between accounts, and originate wire transfers. A smaller number of bank web sites also offer cash management services and payroll services. Industry observers predict that more banks will offer such services over time because small businesses are among their most profitable customers. Large banks have shown particular interest in this area, apparently viewing online banking as a way to lure small business customers away from smaller banks Internet and World Wide Web Maybank File Transfer and the Internet: The internet is a worldwide collection of networks that connects millions of computers and it plays the main role in Maybank transaction system especially online banking, because all the transaction is done by Internet and without the internet there is no online banking. Maybank has become very popular in a world of electronic debits and transfers and other banking activity that, until recently, you would have to have made a trip to the bank to do. All aspects of modern society has benefited from online banking because of the convenience that the internet offers. Internet banks have to make themselves attractive to potential customers. They do this by offering high-yield checking accounts. Internet banks have the comfort of doing so because they do not have the same overhead cost as normal banks. Internet banks are much cheaper to operate than traditional banks, so Internet banks can pass the savings on to their customers. Once they have secured your business, Internet banks offer yo u other services. You will be able to complete your checking, savings, credit cards, mortgages, investments, bill payments and much more from the comfort of your own living room. Maybank has developed a product package designed to provide simple and secure file exchange between the bank and its customers through any of three (3) delivery channels: Web, Desktop Connection or Secure FTP. But in todays networked world of the internet, the browser and e-mail are the ubiquitous software tools used for information exchange. These tools do not adequately support secure file transfer of anything but small files while the ability to track and audit file movement is limited. With M-Secure File Transfer OBS, banks can transmit and receive data automatically without scripts or manual intervention using the web, OBS Desktop Connection Client or Secure FTP. Online Messenger will regularly check for files to be delivered to clients or sent to the bank from designated folders on the customers PC. Customers only have to place a file in the designated send folder and the file will be automatically transmitted to the bank. No complicated FTP processes, no modems, no scripts. Da ta Delivery is secure, using a strong encryption algorithm blowfish with a 448-bit key. Each user has a unique User ID and Password that must be changed every 30 days. E-Commerce E-commerce is business transaction that occurs over the internet and online banking system in Maybank makes it easier, for instance, all these business and transactions can be done and paid at home if you use Maybank online banking. Without the online banking, e-commerce would be difficult and we will have to do these businesses by ourselves because once you want to buy something from the internet youll have to transfer the money and that means going to the bank and do all the transactions and that costs us time, effort and money. Communications: One type of internet banking that Maybank has is Communicative and this type of Internet banking system allows some interaction between the banks systems and the customer. The interaction may be limited to electronic mail, account inquiry, loan applications, or static file updates (name and address changes). Because these servers may have a path to the banks internal networks, the risk is higher with this configuration than with informational systems. Recommendations: Here are some recommendations for Maybank in order to achieve a better online banking: Probably the first thing to think about with online banking would be the convenience. I suggest for Maybank to give us the access to the online banking anytime of the day by improving their online system, because sometimes I have to transfer money for emergency but when I try to access my online banking I found it suspended and thats causes a lot of troubles. Compare the online banking services in Maybank with other banks in order to offer the best services to the customers. Train all the employees on questions customers will ask about online banking in order to make them get a clear idea about it, because some people till now are still afraid of online banking and dont use it. I also suggest for Maybank to make advertisements about this point. As a conclusion, online banking is a part of Internet and all the transactions system occurs by the internet. Like the internet, online banking has his own services and those services such as transfer money which cant be done without the internet and thats one the common things between them. I suggest for Maybank to improve the convenience system and train all the employees to make people get a clear idea about online banking. Security Issues Similarities/ Secure Websites: A secure website is a website using encryption and authentication standards to protect the confidentiality of web transactions. Digital certificates: Digital certificate is a form of electronic credentials for the Internet. Digital certificate is issued by a trusted third party to establish the identity of the ID holder. The third party who issues certificates is known as a Certification Authority (CA). Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol from Verisign Certificate Authority. SSL is a secure way of transferring information between two computers on the Internet using encryption. Strong end to end encryption is also adopted within the banks computer networks and resources. To ensure data confidentiality and integrity, all information transmitted over the Internet is encrypted using the 128-bit (maybank2u.com.my, 2010). Maybank2u.com is WebTrust certified. This certifies our compliance with leading international security standards and Best Practices, as well as our commitment to maintaining a secure environment. WebTrust is an independent corporation that monitors and tests our facilities to assure that we maintain the highest and most current standards in Internet information security and exchange (maybank2u.com.my, 2010). As mentioned on (info.ssl.com, 2006) There are two ways to make sure that Maybank2u.com.my is a secure website: 1) Check the web page URL Normally, when browsing the web, the URLs (web page addresses) begin with the letters http.   However, over a secure connection the address displayed should begin with https note the s at the end. 2) Check for the Lock icon There is a de facto standard among web browsers to display a lock icon somewhere in the window of the browser (NOT in the web page display area!)   For example, Microsoft Internet Explorer displays the lock icon in the lower-right of the browser window: As another example, Mozillas FireFox Web Browser displays the lock icon in the lower-left corner. -Backup: Making copies of data so that these additional copies may be used to restore the original after a data loss event. Backup procedure A backup procedure represents the way you back up your files.   Any backup procedure starts with a concept of a data repository. The backup data needs to be stored and organized. Therefore, its important to establish your backup procedure before choosing the backup solution that is right for you. Different backup procedure has different advantages. Maybank has its own backup procedure performing as follow: Day of Week Weekly Full Backup with Daily Differential Backup Weekly Full Backup with Daily Incremental Backup Sunday A full backup is performed. A full backup is performed. Monday A differential backup contains all changes since Sunday. An incremental backup contains changes since Sunday. Tuesday A differential backup contains all changes since Sunday. An incremental backup contains changes since Monday. Wednesday A differential backup contains all changes since Sunday. An incremental backup contains changes since Tuesday. Thursday A differential backup contains all changes since Sunday. An incremental backup contains changes since Wednesday. Friday A differential backup contains all changes since Sunday. An incremental backup contains changes since Thursday. Saturday A differential backup contains all changes since Sunday. An incremental backup contains changes since Friday. The username must be between 6 to 16 characters and the alphanumeric password between 8 to 12 characters. The password must include both alphabets and numbers but you may also use special characters (e.g. * $) except spaces (maybank2u.com.my, 2010). -Phishing: Phishing is a high-tech scam that uses spam or pop-up messages to attempt to deceive you into disclosing your credit card numbers, bank account information, Social Security number, passwords, and / other sensitive information.Phishing is the term coined by hackers who imitate legitimate companies in e-mails to entice people to share passwords or credit card numbers. Its ability to transfer funds between its internal micro acounts and external accounts via the Automated Clearing House is turned off. The name, my bank, is a place holder for an eventual company name. Many online banking customers reuse their banking login credentials to access other websites, putting themselves at risk of account hijacking and online banking fraud, according to a study by Trusteer Inc. MY BANK-based online security vendor found that 73% of bank customers use their Internet banking password to access non-financial and less secure websites. Forty-seven percent use both their online banking user ID and password on other websites. The practice puts online banking customers at risk because criminals are using a variety of methods including database hacks, brute forcing and phishing to harvest login credentials from non-financial websites, such as social networking sites and Web-based email services, according to Trusteer. Thieves can then test the credentials on financial-services sites to hijack accounts and commit online banking fraud. Money Trouble in MY BANK A series of upsets could spell trouble for my banks virtual economy Theres a long line of avatars waiting to use the automatic-teller machines for Ginko Financial, a virtual bank in the online game Second Life. For more than a week, account holders have been demanding their money back in what some folks are calling a bank run. Set off by high interest rates and a recent ban on in-game gambling, the bank run could ultimately have a major effect on the games economy. The theft of approximately $12,000 from the My bank World Stock Exchange doesnt help matters either. My bank, is an online world where players can buy and sell all kinds of goods and services. The games economy is based on fictional currency, called Linden dollars. But those dollars do have real-world value: players can buy or sell Linden dollars at a rate of about L$270 to $1 on the Lindex market. My banks website even boasts that thousands of residents are making part or all of their real life income from their My bank businesses. Now the entire My bank economywhich could affect more than 8.5 million playersis in trouble. Although financial institutions in My bank are careful to define themselves as games, some My bank banks offer more than 100 percent annual interesta tempting rate when combined with the possibility of turning Lindens into U.S. dollars via the Lindex. Right along with the promise of turning virtual currency into real-life riches are problems with how some Second Life financial institutions are run, says Robert Bloomfield, an economist at Cornell University who makes a serious hobby of studying My banks economy. The average person who goes to a [real-world] bank isnt aware that theres a large regulatory body keeping track of the reserves the bank has, he says. But banks in Second Life, which Bloomfield compares with the Wild West, are mysterious and unregulated. Ginko Financials CEO, Andre Sanchez, of Sao Paolo, Brazil, has refused to release records of Ginkos investments or financial history, and he has not revealed a clear plan for returning peoples money NOW THER IS 3 Reasons Not to Use Online Bank Accounts * Customer Service with Online Bank Accounts One reason to avoid online banks is that you may run into bad customer service. With a brick-and-mortar bank, youll likely have some familiarity with the staff. At a small credit union, the staff might know you well. Why does this matter? Its easier to get good service if you know the staff and they know you. You can pick and choose who you deal with. However, if your online bank account offers any phone service, you have to take your chances with the 1-800 Lottery. You might get somebody helpful and knowledgeable, or you might not. * Online Bank Accounts and Speed of Clearing The internet is supposed to make things faster. However, you might have to wait a long time for checks to clear. You certainly cant ask for a cashiers check if youre in the middle of a crisis and you need settled money yesterday. Likewise, deposits to your online

Australias Involvement In The Vietnam War Essay

Australias Involvement In The Vietnam War Essay In the 1960s communism was spreading to the biggest nations in the world. Communism is where by the government controls the nation. When communism was in Vietnam it hit North of Vietnam and slowly it was going to spread to the South. The ANZUS forces wanted all nations to be under capitalism. Capitalism is where there is private ownership of a business and property. When the news spread about communism there was a fear of communism in Asia and soon Australian. The Australian population was divided when it came to sending Australian soldiers to the Vietnam to help the America in the war. Some Australians felt that the decision to go to war in Vietnam was a good idea. These groups were the liberal government catholic church. Some groups like the R.S.L opposed to going to Vietnam War and the s.o.s mums and the Protestant Churches. When the Menzies government declared publicly that Australian troops were going to be sent to Vietnam there was a huge division in Australian society. Many people supported the governments decision and many people opposed the governments decision. The Liberal Party was all the way with the Menzies decision and the actions he had taken. When Menzies decided resigned in 1966. Harold Holt had taken over his position, the liberal party was behind him in every decision he made. Holt brought Australia in a very close relationship with America. He was very close friend with the American President Lyndon Baines Johnson. People referred to him as LBJ. In 1966 after a visit to Washington DC, where Holt was given a kind welcoming by Johnson, he acknowledged that when it came to Vietnam, Australia was behind America and All the way with LBJ. If South Vietnam were to fall to communism, and as the domino effect theory suggested would happen to other Asian countries like Thailand, Myanmar and Malay a were to follow and after the world would go under communism. Many people didnt even care about Vietnam until they herd it was going to be under communism. Beside the reaction at the election polls, opinion polls also showed widespread support among the people for the government decision to go to war. In a Morgan Gallup a poll held in May 1965, 52%  said they supported government policy in Vietnam, 37%  opposed it and 11%  were undecided. Some Australians thought that going to war was the right thing to do as some Australians have that mentally. The anti-war protest began in 1962 when the first Australian troops were sent to Vietnam to fight with America. Most of the protest/anti-war movement was strongly against conscription. Many of the trade unions called the governments support of Americas decisions and foreign policy in Vietnam blood for dollars, or diggers for dollars. They believed the Australian government believed that if they sacrifice Australian troops America will boost Australias economy. In later years, no other group would be more associated with anti-war activities, but reaction in the universities immediately after the announcement was quite mixed, with some support as well as opposition.  Every evening, television broadcast the horror of Vietnam around the world and brought it into Australian homes. By 1970, the anti-war sentiment had rapidly grown into huge rallies, marches, church services, sit-ins and candlelight processions. These united protest movements demanded a moratorium (a suspension) of the Vi etnam War. The Vietnam War moratorium rallies of 1970 appealed to people as a way of displaying their support for the end of the war. The first Moratorium Day was held in the United States with hundreds of thousands of people stopping work in a mass protest demanding that the United States government withdraw from Vietnam immediately.   Psychologically, Australia had been prepared for another war since the conflict in Korea. Compulsory military training and universal conscription had been briefly re-introduced in 1951. The Australian people had been told so often to prepare for war that they all thought it was only a matter of time before they would have to go into battle with the communists. Many people were thinking why wait until its too late and fight them when they invade our own land lets go out and meet this threat head on. This reason is pretty straightforward and is linked to the fear of communism. Geographically, Vietnam is on Australias doorstep. If South Vietnam were to fall to communism, and as the domino effect theory suggested would happen other Asian countries like Thailand, Myanmar and Malaya were to follow. So Australia to go to war, in my opinion, was the right thing to do.

The Impact of African American Roles on Television :: essays research papers

The image of African Americans has been greatly depreciated by the roles they play on television sitcoms. On these shows African Americans are depicted as being maids, clowns, and buffoons. This misrepresentation of African Americans has become common place through out the media. One of the most controversial sitcoms was the Amos ‘n Andy Show. This sitcom included two black comedic men and began the creation of the African American stereotypes that most people have grown accustom to today. The Amos ‘n Andy Show began as a radio show with two white men portraying two black comedic men. When the show transferred to television, it consisted of the two black men portraying the two black comedic dummies. They were still performing the slapstick comedy as they did on the radio show, but to be able to see them visually had a greater effect. The roles that the two black men played are the typical roles that blacks play in television networks. The shows portraying blacks as having low self-esteem became very popular among whites and some blacks. The Amos ‘n Andy Show was taken off air after being protested by blacks including the NAACP (Poussaint 1). The Amos ‘n Andy Show Godfrey 2 had a profound effect on blacks. From that point on, blacks believed that in order to be successful in the television network they had to portray themselves as being idiotic and lazy. Stereotypes such as this have been continuously developing in the television network even today. The modernized images played by blacks are drunks, thugs, thieves, gangsters, and other characters that are inferior to whites. By creating these images of blacks, it has caused both blacks and whites to see African Americans as being ignorant and believing that is the only way that they should act. Television networks depict whites as the typical families with no problems, and blacks as the single parents with a long list of problems. The impact of those roles had a great effect on how the African American race, young and old conceive their selves. Even today, there are very few African American business people. These racist stereotypes has conformed their minds into thinking that less is best. Young African American children watch these televisions shows that portray blacks as being thugs and uneducated. Those children go through school acting that same way, getting into trouble, and ma king nothing of their selves.

AIDS :: Free AIDS Essays

AIDS Invades Rural America   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  AIDS has been a problem in the United States for many years now. However, many people view victims of AIDS as homosexuals or drug users; this is no longer the case. AIDS is now being spread through teenagers in rural America. Many problems have arisen from the increasing number of victim in smaller America cities where hospitals and doctors are not able to provide suffienct treatment because of a lack of funding and experience. Also, the young adults that have no contracted the virus are victims of emotional and verbal abuse, because small-town America is not used to dealing with the AIDS virus. AIDS has made it’s way into rural America and the people do not know how to cope with the new face of Aids, the hospitals do not know how to treat the patients and the cites have a huge financial burden.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The new face of AIDS is very hard for many small towns to understand. Jamestown, in northwest New York State, is the newest town in which one man, who was infected himself, succeed in infecting many teenagers with AIDS one at a time. According to officials, more than ten young women in Jamestown and surrounding villages had tested positive for the AIDS virus. â€Å"This new face of AIDS is not only young, female, and heterosexual; increasingly it is also rural† (Brownlee 1).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å"There are greater amounts of support are related to higher numbers of coping strategies and a stronger likelihood of reporting a parent's cause of death as AIDS. It was noted that female adolescents reported more coping strategies than did male adolescents† (Dillon 1999: 183). Preventing the contacting of AIDS is one of the many steps today’s teenagers need to be taught in school. Children need to be taught abstinence programs. Abstinence programs are the best method of teaching children safe sex and not condoms. Stuart Berman believes that all abstinence programs are promising and should continue to be funded (Berman 1999: 1486)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Using condoms gives adolescents a feel of security, which they should not have. Condoms give a sense of illusion, whereas, through condoms people are still able to contract AIDS and STD’s. â€Å"Suggestions for intervention include providing information about the illusory nature of some protective strategies and a focus on failing to protect oneself from STD’s† (Thompson 1999: 38).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å"In rural counties across the nation, and especially throughout the South, AIDS cases are on the rise, sometimes at an alarming rate.

Of Mice and Men Second Chapter Analysis Essay

Steinbeck introduced many new characters over the course of the second chapter, most of which are not set at the ranch in Soledad, and met in the bunk house. This new living space, known as the bunk house, provides proof of a very simplistic lifestyle. The small boxes given to each worker for their possessions shows in depth the limited amount of items they have. Each character have attributes and characteristics that differed from one another. Among these new characters is the old swamper, Curley, Curley’s wife, Carlson, Slim, and Crooks. Crooks, who is â€Å"a nigger† (Steinbeck,), acquired the role to be â€Å"the stable buck† where â€Å"the boss [gives him] hell† when he gets angry. As far as social hierarchy the boss, who â€Å"gets pretty mad sometimes, but [is a] pretty nice† (22) guy, holds the most power throughout the ranch, and is closely followed by a character named Slim. This is an extremely interesting insight on how race is approached and dealt with on the ranch. Although Crook’s is a â€Å"nice fella† many take it for granted that he should be treated badly since he is black. This notion seems to be imprinted in the minds of the ranchers, even when people such as the old man are full of compliments for Crook’s. George and Lennie have a very strange relationship. The guys that â€Å"work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in they world. They got no family† (13-14) which is the main reason why Lennie and George have stuck together. Nobody wants to be apart from family in hard times like these. Times have significantly changed in George and Lennie’s life. Therefore, they â€Å"better start swimmin’, or [they will] sink like a stone† (Bob Dylan) in terms of success and hard work. Some believe in a time where hard work runs parallel with achievement. This is not the case, as Steinbeck portrays a time and place where social hierarchy controls the ranch. Curly, who is a fairly powerful figure among the men, â€Å"hates big guys† and often â€Å"picks scraps with big guys. Kind of like he’s mad at ’em because he ain’t a big guy†. He also has a wife in which he is far too proud of, to the point where he shows off to the workers by wearing a glove on one of his hands. This is unusual but is a symbol of their sexual relationship shown off to make himself seem  superior and greater than. With the power that Curly holds, thoughts are given off that his wife holds the same level of power because she is Curly’s husband. This is a wrongly noted thought since she is among a farm full of male workers. Therefore, her sex acquires no power in terms of work and ideas on the ranch. By bringing Curly’s wife into the picture in such a flashy and ‘slutty’ type of fashion, he is possibly giving foreshadowing in the sense that she could be a dangerous force throughout the story and a real â€Å"piece of jail bait† (31) towards the men on the ranch. Curly’s power causes â€Å"most of the other men to avoid her eyes, but Lennie stares with fascination at this beautiful woman†. Steinbeck possibly gives off this foreshadowing hinting that something special will happen between the two. Steinbeck’s use of dialogue is very powerful and assuring. It brings a slight authenticity to the setting in which creates an easier scenario to paint pictures in the minds of his readers. Another theme that is introduced in the second chapter is the idea of social isolation. The story deeply thrives on the notion that everyone is isolated, and that everyone appears to get along well with one another by talking about their isolation. Apart from obvious reasons associated with race, Crook’s is also isolated when he becomes disabled when â€Å"a horse kicked him in the back† causing him to be slower and unable to accomplish certain tasks. Another important symbol that has been introduced is Candy’s dog, which symbolizes the fate that is waiting for the people who have ‘overstayed their welcome’ and who have outlived what they are able to accomplish. More times than not, a new pair of fresh legs beats and old pair. Although, when the old pair still has experience and skill to bring to the table he can still be used effectively. The relation between Candy and his dog are very close because when Carlson suggests that Candy should take one of Slim’s puppies it signifies that the same idea could be drawn up about Candy.

Three Day Road: Character Development

The dickens m ain characters in the invigorated deuce-ace Day Road by Joseph Boyden Xavier chick and Elijah Weesageechack, hand many list disaccordences that be illustrated doneout the clean. Xavier is reticent and visceral, season Elijah is self-assured and talkative. Xavier was elevated(a) by his auntie Niska for the Majority of his childhood, argue to how Elijah was raised in Moose grind by nuns at a residential school. These factors hold an historic responsibility on their personalities and the path that they study and maintain decisions. The three key dissentences among them that argon paramount to the bilgewater and the themes of the refreshing argon firstly their compliments for their Oji-Cree gardening, secondly their obligingness and love for human lifetime, and lastly their personalities. The variations in their personalities create positive alchemy back in their homeland of Canada, further when they are sent to atomic number 63 to urge on i n gentleman War One, their descent is put to the test. An cardinal disaccordence mingled with Elijah and Xavier is the difference in their dress for their old culture.Respecting their Oji-Cree culture is paramount to Xavier, while it is often(prenominal) less important to Elijah. An example of Xaviers close association with his primitive culture basin be seen through the entertain advert, All of them stare elaborate at me. I look up, sitting cross-legged with one of the horses sprawled beside me, its head on my lap. I look give care Ive been paint red. The smell of blood is heavy. It covers the wooden w eachs, the trading floor, the strew upon the floor. Elijah sees that one of my hands rests on the floor with my skinning knife in it. The horses neck gapes open along its boastfully artery. ( summon 189) This example shows Xaviers tie-up to his aboriginal culture because having respect for animals is a major part of the Oji-Cree morals. In this exact opinion E lijah was willing to shoot the horses, which shows a lose of respect for the animal, which goes against the morals of his aboriginal heritage.A second key example of how Xavier and Elijah differ when it comes to their aboriginal culture is seen through Elijahs willingness to assimilate into European culture. In the novel Elijah states, Jolly good night for a little snooping, eh, Thompson? Elijah says. Thompson shakes his head at the words, and his dentition are washcloth almost to a glow. You do a better British tension than a Brit, he says. (Page 137) Elijahs readiness to develop an side of meat accent is in stark tell apart to the fact that Xavier refuses to assimilate into the European culture. The ordinal example of how Xavier and Elijah are different in the substance they treat their aboriginal heritage is seen when the two of them are on their way to Toronto and they sell their buttocksoe to get roughly extra money so they lot afford new apparel. These new costum e are a necessity because they guide on in to blend into their new environment to a sealed extent. The hunting quote depicts the second perfectly, When Elijah strolls out, I laugh. He has chosen a b miss suit and stiff, high white collar. In the mirror he looks like a preacher. This draw ins to Elijah (Page 142). In the scene, it is obvious that Xavier purchases his costume out of necessity, while Elijah purchases his new clothes because it is appealing to assimilate into the new Canadian culture they are virtually to be immersed within. The most important part of the quote is the final sentence, which states, This appeals to Elijah. The fact that it appeals to him proves that he has interest in cosmos assimilated into the Canadian society. through the example presented it is continuant to see that Xavier has respect for his Oji-Cree culture, while Elijah has a lack of respect for it. A second example of how Elijah and Xavier differ is seen through their different views o f brutality and respect to contendds other(a) peoples lives.Xavier has a lot of respect for humans and their lives and collect to this he kills out of necessity. On the other hand, Elijah enjoy putting to death humans and does it for the stake of sport. A perfect example of how Xavier and Elijah differ in regards to the respect of human lives is seen in the subsequent quote, I jump to my feet originally I know that I do it and approach Elijah with balled fists. Then I find myself reaching for my knife. But what he verbalize makes me gag and I kneel down and stick my finger down my throat. The content of my stomach come out in a slimy glob. Page 310) This example highlights the fact that Xavier isnt evening willing to joke about take in German citizens, while Elijah doesnt plainly find it funny he cant understand why Xavier would take it so incredibly honestly. Elijahs lack of respect for the people he kills shows a vicious brutality that is non seen in Xavier Bird. A seco nd example of how Xavier and Elijahs personalities contrast can be seen through Elijahs thirst to kill people. Elijahs obsession over carnage can be highlighted in the following excerpt, In the long hours of hunting Elijah tries to understand what is exploitation on him.He talks to me about this through the nights we spend out in the damp and mud. Mist rises from craters and swirls in the stink. In the end, the answer that comes is simple. Elijah has learned to take joyousness in killing (Page 283). This quote is an unimagined example of Elijahs brutality because it is not only seen through his actions, but in like manner his thought process. It proves that Elijah is not just killing for necessity he has actually gone(a) mad. This highlights the difference surrounded by the two characters because Xavier strictly kills so he can locomote through the war.The final exemplar in regards to Brutality and respect for human life can be emphasized by the data link that the two main characters substantiate with their comrades. The following quote accentuates this fact, He opens his look and looks up at Elijah. Elijah raises the wood in both hands and swings it down herculean as he can onto grey-haired Eyes forehead (Page 340). This exemplar intelligibly shows the variance in Elijahs association with his comrades in comparison to Xavier birth with his comrades. Xavier doesnt have the ability to speak as well as Elijah, but he has a much stronger emotional connection with the people he fights with. When looking at Elijah, it undisguised that he doesnt have a strong emotional connection with any of his comrades and if there is connection at all it is strictly to use them. Elijahs closest friend in the war other than Xavier was Grey Eyes and he was willing to kill him so he could get away with the crimes he had committed. In conclusion, Xavier puts his comrades and the people he is fighting against in high regard and has a serious respect for them, while Eli jah just wants to distract e truly problem that confronts him he doesnt care how he does it.The third and final example between the two characters that has a major moment on the story and the key themes of the novel are their personalities. As stated in the opening paragraph, Xavier is reserved and visceral, while Elijah is self-assured and talkative. Xavier was raised by his Aunt Niska for the Majority of his childhood, opposed to how Elijah was raised in Moose Factory by nuns at a residential school. These differences in upbringing play a plain role in how the two of them make decisions, and how closely they hold onto their aboriginal culture. It is open air that the chemistry of their friendship works in the setting of the Northern Ontario woods, but it fails to follow through when they fight in World War One. An example of a difference between the two characters is seen in the way that Xavier is much much a steady character, he doesnt have much to say because his English i snt very strong. A subtle yet important example of this is seen in the ensuing quotation, So youre an Indian, then? he asks. I nod. Youre pretty short for an Indian, aint ya?The others laugh. (Page 23) Xaviers trouble with the English language is highlighted in the excerpt because all he does is nod. This makes life in Europe incredibly awkward for Xavier. This is in blatant contradistinction to Elijah because he thrives in this type of situation. Elijahs verbose nature can be examined in the following handing over, He began lecture this way to get the others to laugh, but he likes it now. Makes him feel respectable. He told me theres a magic in it that protects him. (Page 137) Elijahs ability to speak English fluently and to adapt the way he talks so that he has an English accent makes him much more popular with their comrades. Elijahs upbringing has an effect on his appeal for European culture because instead of organism brought up in the wilderness he is brought up in a resid ential school by nuns. Giving him a much different outlook on their culture than Xavier. The final example of how Elijah and Xavier differ in terms of personality is seen stovepipe in the following passage, I entreat I could fly sheet like that, Elijah says to me in Cree. I wish I could fly like that, like a bird, he repeats, staring up like a little boy. Maybe a master will take me up sometime. Me, Im happy to stay on the ground on my belly in the dirt, I answer. Thinking about locomote from up there makes me sick (Page 164). This passage highlights the difference between their adventurousness. Elijahs willingness to go up in a insipid can be correlated with his courage in battle. Xaviers contentment with being on the ground can be correlated with his timid nature socially and on the battlefield to a certain extent. This quotation proves that Elijah has a much more adventurous personality than Xavier. In cessation, Elijah and Xavier are incredibly different people with person alities that are nearly opposites and this ends up having an extreme effect on the plot and the themes of the story trine Day Road. In conclusion, the two main characters in the novel Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden Xavier Bird and Elijah Weesageechack, have many significant differences that are illustrated over the course of the novel. As shown with the reinforcement points above, Xavier is reserved and visceral, while Elijah is self-assured and talkative.Xavier was raised by his Aunt Niska for the majority of his childhood, opposed to how Elijah was raised in Moose Factory by nuns in a residential school. These factors that affect their personalities have major impacts on the three main differences that lie between them. These differences are, firstly their respect for their Oji-Cree culture, secondly their discretion and love for human life, and lastly how they extend themselves throughout the novel. The differences between them have a positive influence on their relationship when they are in Canada, but in Europe, these differences end up destroying their friendship.
